Imperfectly Organized

I've bought my Christmas presents for everyone in my head (just have to find them online and in stores), have committed to how to split the family holidays now that we're married (does everyone struggle with that, or just me? I seriously haven't cried as much as I have trying to figure out which family gets who for which holiday). All of this hoiday prep reminded me it's time to start my planner search. Every year I buy myself a new planner for my January 1st birthday. It's the only thing about my holiday birthday that I look forward to - a brand new, clean, blank slate for a new year and a new age.

During my college "I babysit and make bank and have no responsibilities except to pass my classes and party all week" days, I paid a lot for these planners:

Kate Spade

I've been through a wide variety of planners, but this year I hit gold with the Whomi Clarity Agenda:I am in Love. And for the first time in a long time, I'm considering buying a 2009 refill for my 2008 planner. How fiscally responsible of me, no? It's the best planner I've ever had, plenty of space to jot things down, big enough to stuff the mail receipts into when I'm in a hurry, it's the best. The color coding is for busy ladies with muliple things - a color for each kid, each job, volunteer activity, etc. I use them to schedule workouts, meals, jot myself notes.

How do you keep your appointments and obligations organized throughout the year? Planners, calendars, Blackberries, iPhones, permanent marker messages on your palm? I want to hear about them. Sound off!

  1. If it wasn't for my iPhone, I don't know how I would make it. My entire life is seriously stored in my iPhone and I wouldn't have it any other way.

  2. I keep the traditional planner like you. I have a calendar on my work computer, but much prefer my paper planner. I must have a monthly calendar and then a weekly calendar. :)

  3. First of all, you are not alone in the holiday planning chaos with families. To add to the chaos, my family is on the west coast, his on the east coast, us in the mid west. It's awful, and yes, many, many, many tears shed each year. We are lucky enough to actually do both coasts each year but I still feel like an ass. Can't win :(

As far as my organizational skills....I am highly dependent on calendars with alarms (Outlook, phone, etc). If only notebooks beeped!

  4. I just purchased a WeekDate weekly planner. Pretty cool and you only write repeating things just once. So far I love it.

  5. I know the feeling, girlie. What we do is give individual gifts to the parents, then we draw names out of a hat of family members and spend a set $ amount on the person we draw. So far, we're all still speaking to each other.

I am married to my Outlook calendar and my phone for organization.

  6. I can't do electronic planners.... there is something soothing for me to actually write myself notes.

I used to get myself a new planner whenever I got the urge. It was like changing deodorant. I don't know why I loved them so much. I still check them out at the stores when they put them out.

But, now I have a Franklin Covey at work that i use for everything. I'm in love with it because it has daily (for work tasks, phone numbers and notes) and monthly for planning. It doesn't fit in my purse though, which is disappointing. I may have to check yours out for my purse calendar.... but do I want two planners to coordinate????? I don't know.....

  7. I have a planner that I love from Target. Sometimes it is a little too much with all the extras it has but I am liking the looks of your planner...where did it come from?

  9. I am SERIOUSLY addicted to my planner. I NEED paper too. It's something about being able to flip back and forth between pages. For all I buy, i should own stock in Franklin Covey. haha.

  10. Hi,
I found out about your post from G&D. I love the topic! Like you, I am always looking for a new planner- I might try 3 in one year. I’ve never found one I love, but I definitely prefer paper to electronic. There is just something about hand writing. I think I’m going to get a WeekDate to try next- I hope you like yours!

I posted about your post in my blog- http://leedawn82.blogspot.com/2008/11/planners-galore-dorky-i-know.html

Also, I understand your pain about splitting the holidays- this is our second married holiday season and I’m still upset about it. I don’t think there is an easy way you do it. Hope you find something that works!

ps- super blog! It’s been added to my list. :)
