Babies Don't Need Much

Hi, my name is Emily and I hate clutter.  And I had a baby three months ago.  And babies come with clutter.  PLASTIC clutter

I won't bore you with my thoughts on the baby industry playing on first time parents' fears in an effort to sell more gear.  I'll simply say I wanted the bare minimum when it came to nurturing, loving and entertaining Mr. Thomas.

Really, you don't need much.  A crib and/or pack n' play.  A breast pump.  A car seat and stroller of some kind. A load of white onesies.  And a few pieces of plastic that you can cycle in and out of the basement.

Here's what we have:

Baby Trend Car Seat (Here's the really thought out process I used to pick a car seat:  Found the two safest car seats per Consumer Reports, and picked the one with colors I liked the best.  Mother of the year.)

A crib upstairs for sleeping, a pack n' play downstairs for occasional naps and diaper changing - now that Tommy is past the newborn stage, we'll probably fold this up for travel use more than napping and diaper changing use.

Snap n' Go Stroller.  Did you know I'm not a matchy matchy person?  The last thing I wanted was a car seat that matched my stroller.  I'm fickle like that.  This folds up with one hand, weighs next to nothing and is super cheap.  LOVE.

Luckily, our friend Jenna loaned us most of her plastic baby stuff so we didn't have to purchase new.  Because some babies (ahem, mine) don't like swings.  So from Jenna we have lots of baby gear - bouncer, swing, play gym, etc - that we pull out and put away with each use. I would never have bought the play gym - seems like a blanket could work just as well so it wasn't even on my radar - but it's Thomas's favorite thing in the whole wide world.  It lives in our living room, everything else filters in and out of the basement as needed.  Jenna is our lifesaver.

And, here's the single most invaluable thing for me.  My breast pump.  I used it daily since Thomas was born to establish milk supply and pump a daily bottle, it enabled me to build up a stash of milk for going back to work (and on dates with Mr. B), and is now my sidekick three - four times a day at the office.

We did buy an inexpensive Jogger (a discounted floor model at $109, that after a gift card cost us $9) after the fact because I was craving running and the snap n' go? Well, it don't run.  I like it a lot, but it's huge and hard to transport so we still use the snap n' go when we're out and about and for regular walks around the neighborhood.

I figure by spending $9 on a jogging stroller now, I can justify a spendy one in a few years when we need a double.  Instead of spending other gift cards we received on cutesy plastic, they're going towards future must-have purchases - like a bigger car seat.  And that's that.  Really, you don't need much.  My house is mostly plastic free and our bank account didn't take a huge hit with baby purchases.  Works for me.

  1. You are so freaking smart! Wish I was reading blogs 12 years ago when my daughter was a baby. We knew at that time that it was one and done and I could not wait to get rid of stuff once she outgrew it. :)

  2. This sounds awesome. We are also trying to keep our baby purchases at a minimum, especially since, you know, we have no money. So far all we've bought is the crib. We registered for the world but as far as what we will actually buy ourselves if we don't receive it as gifts? No idea yet, but hopefully not a whole lot.

  3. We aren't to the baby stage yet, but I really appreciate your attitude towards all the 'stuff'. I hope I'll be able to stick to that when the time comes.

  4. I'm so glad you wrote this article. Hubs and I may want to start a family in the next few years and I think about all the stuff you accumlate with kids. I know I would have to lay down the law with my parents and my husbands parents to seriously limit the baby stuff. I hate useless items and if it's a useless, plastic, bright colored item laying around my house? No thank you!

  5. I, too, am scared about all the toys and junk that so often come along with having a baby. I'm not much of a shopper and buyer, but I'm sacred that my parents and the husbands parents are going to go gift CRAZY. In fact, I know they will. How do I kindly tell them not to buy anything unless I specifically ask for it? Yeah, I don't think that's gonna work...

  6. We didn't buy a lot either--just the crib really. We received a pack n play and travel system as gifts. J's mom bought us a portable swing from a consignment shop. I did end up buying an activity center, which totally was worth the investment.

Now that she's mobile, I feel like we're investing in more "plastic"--we bought a jumperoo (from a second hand store) just to have somewhere to put her while I take a shower (we wanted the crib to be for sleeping only). But what's really starting to accumulate is TOYS. Books, blocks, etc. I feel like they are everywhere!

PS- I think you're right about the pump. I *wish* we would have invested in a better one.

  7. Would you believe that I've had three kids and NEVER owned a swing, an exersaucer, a breast pump - and for our third child, we finally bought a pack and play. Guess what? My kids are totally fine - if not ahead of the gang (says their so unbiased mother).

  8. that is such smart thinking to borrow large items that you don't know if your baby will use/like or not. I have always been oh everything has to match

  9. That is good to hear- both the lack of clutter and dates with your hubby. I get so overwhelmed when I see friends' houses overflowing and bursting.

  10. This is encouraging . . . because one of the things I've been dreading about the idea of having kids is the buildup of stuff. I have seen friends let baby plastic take over their entire house, and it ain't pretty. =) I'm glad for the reminder that it doesn't have to be that way.

  11. Dude, why are we the same person? I have both that p & p and the pump. In fact, I was going to go with a manual pump since I'll be home all day but the day the milk came in I sent John to the store for the electric. I ADORE it, best purchase ever. And it's so funny, when I was registering, I haddddd to have one of everything. Now that he's here, I've been returning all sorts of crap I've deemed useless and space-taking.

And we'll be happy to send some hair out to Tommy. Babies wearing wigs are HILARIOUS.

  13. Yup. They come with so much stuff. My philosophy was to not buy anything and just accept whatever hand me downs and baby shower gifts I got. I don't buy toys or clothes. I just work with what I have. Which is probably still way more than Joseph will ever need, but we never spent a dime. (Thank you family!)

  14. You are so impressive. I think I will need to remember this when we decide to have children. I can see how I would feel that he/she will need everything. Clearly, I don't.
